Finals Project and some closing words

Download: Final Project for Web Design

I’m really happy for everyone in my class. It was great introducing to you the basics of web design; and even though it was the first time for most of you to write HTML, much less see it, you all still pulled through in the end. That’s quite an achievement and also happens to be one of the most significant things you will do in your design career as you jump from print designs to coded ones.

Since the web is always changing then so must you in order to keep up with the latest in web design tools and tactics. Hopefully some of you will get to love the web as much as I do and learn how to leverage your amazing skills as designers for the sake of making the web more beautiful and more usable.

On being a web designer

Every business owner wants a site, the only problem is that they don’t know how to make one. Whenever you hear someone mention something even remotely close to that, that’s your cue. Stand up and be known as an all around designer–print, web, or otherwise.

Good luck to all on all of your finals and I wish you the best in every design project that you do.

Lastly, yes, I’m always on the lookout for good designers I can pass projects to. Since starting the school year, I’ve passed enough projects to former students to pay for one whole semester of Ateneo tuition. I’ve got my eye on some of you and one of these days I might give you a call when things get really full.

Best,
John

Extension for Senior’s Portfolio

I’m extending the portfolio project for the seniors. Here are the updates to the project

  1. Deadline for the portfolio project is extended to Feb 28.
  2. Project will be made optional instead of required. If you’ve already started it then good.

Again, if you don’t have a portfolio, you can use mock-up images but be sure to let me know who you are first so I can keep track of it.

Project #4 Details: Making the portfolio

Portfolio work is very exciting work because of these main reasons:

  1. It’s your portfolio, YOU call the shots
  2. They [users] are actually expecting to see a lot of images
  3. You can get emotional all you want. No one will say otherwise.

‘Nuff said.

(Updated) Some guy designs it, You develop it

It’s ready! Get the file now!

Download Design PSD File

It’s a common trend in agencies to separate the design from the development since it lets them dish out websites faster. Next up, you’ll be developing the image below designed specially for this project. Below is the sample JPG, you don’t want that. What you want is the PSD file which you can get from the link above.

Creatives

This design is a portfolio design. Just by studying the JPG file above, you can already make out the foundations of the site and even code the primary areas of the page (1 page only) before the PSD file gets released.

Time Breakdown of Modern Web Design

I don’t really do the swearing thing but I do have a print out of Bill Gates filled with dart holes. It’s a stress release thing.

Call for Project Problems

If for some reason your site just won’t obey what you’re telling it to do, email me the scenario and I’ll discuss the solution in class. No names here, it’s all anonymous for your privacy.

Project Extension: My HTML Hates Me!

It happens every now and then. Project extension GRANTED!

New deadline: January 28 midnight

If you’re still wondering what exactly is midnight, it’s one minute after 11:59PM on Jan 28. It can’t get any clearer than that. Don’t forget to scour the web for any helpful tips since it’s hard to tackle every web design concept in class with the time we have. In Rome, do as the Romans do…in this case, Google it!

I’ll be making Tuesday an open day for questions and other stuff you’d like to ask in order to fix your layout. I’m sure you’ve learned by now that it’s not as easy as it looks. But if ever you do, the feeling of doing it right is just absolutely euphoric!

With a bombardment of design comments coming from the client, the only pure thing which they can’t touch is the code itself…so code to your heart’s content! My previous post on The mind of a Web Developer gives you a preview of what lies ahead.
